Of course you can set HDR to auto but then you get the annoying resyncs between menu and video. That sounds a bit counter intuitive but the nice thing is you get all content at BT.2020 on a PQ gamma without any resyncing so you can keep your PJ in "HDR" mode, ie your preferred custom curve and BT.2020 colour space with the vertex stripping HDR messages and no 20s resyncs. Then try SDR mapped to HDR, so you have all content mapped to BT.2020.

You'll need to set a gamma of 1.8 - 2.0 and I settled on 2.0. Try the "bright" setting as opposed to "Vivid" or "Standard" - it seems to look the best to me. So first have a go with the shipped firmware (1.7.7) and see what you think of the HDR to SDR tone mapping - it's not bad at all and I'd be interested to hear what you think of it vs the Oppo.

Just to be annoying though, Futeko are about 30 miles from where I live It'll certainly be interesting to see Nvidia finally manage to change colour space with content in the same way all the other boxes do. The Shield works perfectly as long as your display has the agility to change colour space independent of dynamic range - so I have the Shield set for 4K 12-bit 422 BT.2020 so when playing SDR Rec.709 material, the Shield remaps to 2020 and I set my projector to BT.2020 colour space but with a standard gamma - effectively an SDR BT.2020 mode, but not everyone can do that. The Shield was my go to box for 4K until the Z9S which is rapidly becoming my firm favourite - I have a few issues with the latest firmware but I'm talking to Zidoo and hopefully this will result in some fixes - after all, it's still very early days for the Z9S, but it's great to have a manufacturer who will listen and engage in dialogue. I think the 1295 boxes are fundamentally flawed for 4K, but from the results from other boxes I can't see why the X9S fails at 2K as well as 4K as far as frame rate goes.
